Groundhog Says 6 more weeks of winter…

I know that by the end of the day, you will have heard that Punxsutawney Phil has predicted 6 more weeks of winter. As I write this it is 60 degrees out and calling for snow tonight. How a groundhog can predict the weather with all of the different weather patterns this year around the US is beyond me.

Here are some somewhat interesting facts about Groundhog Day from Groundhog.org, the official site of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

  • Punxsutawney Phil was named after King Phillip.
  • Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800s
  • The celebration of Groundhog Day began with Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers.
  • Phil saw his shadow 96 times, 14 times he didn’t see his shadow, and 14 years with no record
  • The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds
  • A groundhog’s life span is normally 6 to 8 years
  • A groundhog’s diet consists of lots of greens, fruits, and vegetables and very little water

As interesting as it may seem, this is the Groundhogs Day I think of and relate too..
